Fencing contractor Dave Thompson from Gowanbrae, Wairau Valley has been in the trade for over 30 years, and has been providing contracting services to Marlborough and Nelson landowners for the past seven years. From constructing farm and stock yards, residential and commercial fencing, to post driving and vineyard development work, from the cultivation, marking out, layout, and putting in the stays to running the wires.
Because Dave and his close knit team of between 5-11 workers (depending on commitments) perform such a wide variety of work they tend to be busy all year around with little in the way of quiet times. He describes the best aspect of his work as meeting the people. "We get around a bit and we meet a lot of good people with a great outlook on life, and we get to see a lot of beautiful country too."
Dave depends on reliable equipment and operates three John Deere tractors to perform a wide variety of tasks. A 5300 he has operated for the past four years, a 12 month old 5310, and a 2140, all purchased and serviced by Agrimech in Blenhiem.
Dave describes Agrimech as a good outfit to work with. "Excellent really, the service is good. If we breakdown it's only a phone call and they are here as soon as they can. If we get a breakdown at some ungodly hour - they look after us."
"John Deere is a good all-round tractor. Pricewise they are competitive, the service is really good, and they have a good name - always have. I've had no problems, and it's the people you deal with and the service which makes all the difference."
